RICHLAND, Wash. -- The Department of Ecology has some high praise for a Richland couple that's doing their part to save the environment.
Jake and Michelle Shupe own the Barracuda Coffee Shop on Van Giesen Street in Richland. Together they sort and recycle more than one thousand pounds of waste each month.
The owners say that saving the environment wasn't something they thought about until they started their business.
"Just realized how much waste there was and garbage we were emptying and it just kind of helped us to realize we need to do something," explains Michelle Shupe.
Since they started recycling, they've cut down their waste from three 55 gallon garbage bags a day, down to just one or two a week.
The couple also encourages their customers to recycle by offering used coffee grounds for home gardens.
