Giving Green vegetable to the hungry

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash.-- Gardening is a hobby for some but a local group is doing it to help the hungry.

Three years ago volunteers started a garden and all the food they grow goes to the Richland Food Bank and low-income seniors. They called the program Giving Greens. So far they have donated more than two tons of produce. The organizer, Doug Nordwall, told us he found out that the food banks and seniors were in need and then took action.

"They were under a great deal of stress. They weren't getting enough food out to people so I said well we have this piece of empty land out here that's city property," said Nordwall.

Saturday they prepared the garden for the new season of planting by tilling the soil. Volunteers of all ages came out to help.
