KENNEWICK, Wash.-- A new alternative to tire chains has been approved by the state for winter roads called tire socks.
Experts say this form of tire traction is better for the roads than chains or studs. But many local auto stores don't carry them yet because they haven't heard of them. The Auto Zone in Pasco, Troy Pilgrim, said there isn't a demand for them.
"We have a lot of people coming in for chains, studs, every winter and all those times we've never had anyone ask for a tire sock," said Pilgrim.
The tire sock originated in Scandinavia and has gained popularity in other countries before coming to the U.S. Some say they're safer on slippery roads.
