Parents plead innocent to charges stemming from classroom shooting
PORT ORCHARD, Wash. –The parents of a nine-year-old boy have pleaded innocent to charges stemming from a shooting that wounded their son's classmate.
The gun was in the boy's backpack that he brought to class. The gun fired when it dropped on a desk, wounding an eight-year-old girl.
Officers arrested the boy's mother during Thursday's court appearance in Port Orchard and led her away in handcuffs. A judge set Jamie Lee Chaffin's bail at $50,000 bail because she's a convicted felon.
Her boyfriend, Douglas L. Bauer, who has no prior record, was released without bail.
Both are charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and third-degree assault, a felony that could send them to prison for up to five years.
