The attorney hired to represent the army sergeant from Washington State accused of killing 16 civilians in Afghanistan says his family is totally shocked by accounts of the massacre.

John Browne says the man's family saw no signs of aggression or anger.

He describes the soldier as mild-mannered. He says just days before the shooting the army staff sergeant from Joint Base Lewis-McChord saw a friend lose a leg in an explosion.

Browne is not identifying his client.

A senior defense official says the sergeant is expected to be flown to the U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas as early as Friday.

His name may be released Friday as well.
