First big piece of Electric Highway gets juice

CENTRAL POINT, Ore. (AP) - The first major stretch of what's been dubbed an "Electric Highway" from Canada to Mexico is going operational.

A series of fast-charging stations along 160 miles of Interstate 5 in Oregon were opening to the public Friday. They are designed to let electric car owners forget about being tied to their home chargers and hit the road.

The eight new charging stations stretch from the California border north to the Oregon city of Cottage Grove and are located at gas stations, restaurants and motels just off I-5, the second-busiest interstate in the nation.

One is at an historic stage coach stop. The chargers are spaced about every 25 miles. Electric car drivers can recharge in about 20 minutes.
