Yakima City Council to vote on firefighter and police contracts
YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Yakima City Council will vote Tuesday on union contracts for firefighters and patrol officers.
The agreements include wage freezes for both groups this year, but the promise of pay raises in 2013 and 2014. They'll also need to shell out more for insurance premiums. Interim City Manager Michael Morales says he wanted this deal settled before the new police chief and city manager took over.
"For the next manager and the next police chief and our new fire chief, that's gonna really help to know that for the next 2 years at least those agreements are taken care of," says Morales.
Morales says the city gave a number of concessions to each group including the future pay raises and an agreement to have a minimum of 19 firefighters on staff in case of multiple fires.
