KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Drinking and driving is a problem year round, but the risks seem to increase around holiday weekends.
And if you're slapped with a DUI, it can really cost you. We added the fines and penalties.
First time offenders are slapped with a $700.00 fine then are long list of other penalties could take that seven hundred bucks up to a minimum of $1,800.00. Usually court fees are the highest which could take the total up to $8,000.00.
Attorney Dawn Hickman says these numbers make first time offenders straighten up,"for those who have never entered the system and their first experience is through a dui, you probably never see them again."
According to Hickman additional penalties could include 30 days of electronic monitoring, and a five year probation.
She says repeat offenders could see extra jail time or lose their drivers license.
