Sani, Long earn GNAC baseball player, pitcher of the week honors

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Central Washington University baseball team swept the Great Northwest Athletic Conference weekly awards, as junior catcher Kyle Sani (Kennewick, Wash./Southridge HS) and senior pitcher Kyle Long (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway HS) were named GNAC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after helping the Wildcats to a four-game sweep of Saint Martin's University this past weekend.

Sani was 9 of 14 with a double and a home run while scoring six runs and driving in eight in the four-game series. In the final contest of the weekend, he drove in five runs as the Wildcats defeated the Saints 19-12, helping CWU extend its winning streak to six games -- the team's longest such streak since 2007.

Long threw a complete-game shutout in the second game of the series on Saturday, improving to 1-2 on the season in the 2-0 win. He threw seven innings of four-hit baseball, walking just one while striking out six. Long tied a career-high for innings pitched in the process.

Sani joins senior teammates Brett Bielec (Port Orchard, Wash./North Mason HS) and Brady Kincannon (Ephrata, Wash.) in earning Player of the Week honors so far this season, while Long becomes the first CWU pitcher to earn the accolade in 2012.

Central Washington, 8-8 overall and 4-0 in GNAC play, is scheduled to visit Whitworth University for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday (Mar. 21) at 1 p.m. The Wildcats will then host conference co-leader Western Oregon University (15-6, 4-0 GNAC) in a four-game series this weekend, with doubleheaders slated for Saturday (Mar. 24 at 1 p.m.) and Sunday (Mar. 25 at noon).
