MABTON, Wash. -- Project leaders with Catholic Charities Housing Services team up with local volunteers to put the final touches on a new park in Mabton.
Dozens people from around the community, including police and neighbors pitched in to build the Mabton Community Park.
More than 100 volunteers have been out at the site since Friday, laying down the sod, planting trees, and helping with maintenance.
The park is across from the Artz-Fox Elementary School and next to a housing development built and managed by CCHS.
Leaders with Catholic Charities Housing Services say the park has really taken shape, in a short amount of time. "Before that, it was a complete dirt area. And I can remember the times when it was up to weeds above my head. So the park has really been transformed since yesterday," MCP project manager Laura Armstrong said.
The park will feature a playground area for children, a skate park, and a place for kids to play soccer.
"The Mabton Community Park is a unique grassroots efforts," Armstrong added.
CCHS works with local government, community groups and local parishes to create and maintain affordable housing for families.
