Local Woman Makes Kentucky Derby Hats

Posted: Updated:

POST FALLS, Idaho. - It's that time of year…Kentucky Derby time! One local woman creates custom-made derby style hats. "I will see about 150 hats for the derby," Diane Siverson said.

She started selling hats eight years ago. Siverson explained, "One day I went to my husband Ron and I said I want to start making hats, and he was like, how are we going to get rid of them because he knew that I did not mean one or two."

And now, she has a website and sells 300 hats a year. "About 50 percent of the orders are phone orders, they call in from the website, they describe what they wore," Siverson said.

The Kentucky Derby is Siverson's busiest time of year, but Kate Middleton has really made hats like these popular. Siverson is happy she stared her business.

"It was a gamble, but it's paid off."
