YAKIMA, Wash. -- The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has recently awarded more than $800,000 dollars in grants to two Yakima Valley nonprofit groups.

United Way of Central Washington and the Yakima Valley Community Foundation will each receive $440,000 over the next four years.

"This is a tremendous benefit for us, where we allocate as much as a million-and-a-half dollars a year to the different programs that we support," said Pete Bansmer, board chair for United Way of Central Washington.

United Way has several programs in Yakima and Kittitas counties.

Linda Moore, president and CEO of the Yakima Valley Community Foundation, says the grants represent a significant relationship between the two organizations.

"This gives us an opportunity to increase the dollars that go out to these desperately needed programs throughout our community," Bansmer added.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded more than $5-million in grants to nine different organizations in Washington state.
