Investigator trying to figure out what sparked a string of fires on Sunday
BENTON CITY, Wash. --Benton County fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a string of fires near Benton City and Prosser Sunday.
The one between the Benton City and Yakitat Rd exits burned up 35 acres along Interstate-82 West. Two other fires sparked just hours later in Prosser.
Monday, investigators dug through the singed brush, hoping to find a point of origin and a cause but they don't want to say it's arson yet.
"We had several fires that started in different areas along the interstate simultaneously. One after another. It could be deemed suspicious. It could be anything from a blown tire that somebody didn't know about. We haven't actually ruled out the cause of any other fires yet," says Benton County Fire District Two Captain Bill Reed.
Reed says a 13 acre fire in West Richland Sunday was sparked by people shooting guns in dry brush.
