Students learn to eat healthy and stay active

RICHLAND, Wash., -- Students at Richland's Badger Mountain Elementary School learned two important life lessons this morning - eat healthy and stay active.

Those were the goals of the 'Farm-to-Market' wellness fair put on by the district's nutrition services department.

Students spent the morning learning how their food goes from the farm to the dinner table and why physical fitness is important.

Organizers say the event helps prepare kids to make the right choices later in life.

"Over 30% of our children are obese at this time," says Nutrition Services Director Denise Christensen.  "We like to start at a young age to teach the children how to put the correct things in their body, eat nutritionally correct and be physically fit!"

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity rates have more than tripled in the last 30 years.
