Man struggles with officers, faces attempted murder charges
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima police arrested a man they say punched a police officer and tried to take a gun away from another officer.
Officer were investigating a wanter person when they contacted four males in parked vehicle on the 1000 block of South 6th Street at around 2 a.m. Saturday morning.
One of the men was armed with a loaded pistol, according to a release issued by the Yakima Police Department.
Officers ordered the suspect with the gun to keep his hands up, but he made several attempts to reach for his weapon.
After the suspect was take from the car he began to fight with officers, according to police.
Police say the suspect punched one of the officers, was taken down to the ground, but made several attempts to reach for the officer's weapon with an apparent "intent to kill him" according to the release.
The suspect was arrested and was booked into the Yakima County Jail. He faces three attempted murder charges and possession of a stolen firearm.
Police say the other males in the car didn't know the suspect and were only giving him a ride. They also didn't know the suspect was armed.
A witness told police that when the officers first approached the vehicle, the suspect told the witness he was going to shoot the officers.
Police say the pistol had been stolen and the suspect had a prior record as an armed career criminal.
