MOXEE, Wash. -- Two East Valley High School students have recently qualified for the National High School Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyoming, this summer.
Robyn van der Merwe and Sierra Bryan, both juniors, competed in the Washington State High School Rodeo State Finals and qualified for the nationals.
Bryan qualified in barrel racing and van der Merwe qualified to in barrel racing, girls cutting and target shooting.
"It's a big accomplishment for me, because I've never been to nationals or anything and it's my first year," Bryan said.
Bryan and van der Merwe are also friends who have spent a lot of time getting ready for these competitions.
"You start at a really young age, so by the time you get here, you really know how to control your nerves and how to compose yourself. So, you can focus and apply everything you've learned so far," van der Merwe explained.
Bryan and van der Merwe will head to Wyoming for the nationals July 15 to July 21. They'll be among the more than 1500 contestants this year.
