Abacus champs visit Othello

PASCO, Wash.-- Scootney Springs Elementary School in Othello is getting a visit from a national abacus winner.

Sisters Ria and Lina Adachi won the top spots in the U.S.A. National Abacus Competition for their grades.

The girls and their abacus teacher came from L. A. to meet with Scootney Springs students and teach them the benefits of learning abacus at a young age.

Abacus teacher, Ray Yabuki, says learning to use an abacus lays a foundation for understanding math.

"Teaching abacus is very important because kids can learn math at a very early age to do math very efficiently," says Yabuki.

Yabuki took Ria and Lina to compete in competitions in Japan as well. They will be teaching abacus all day Monday to first through fifth graders at Scootney Springs.
