Hydroplane racing is returning to Coeur d'Alene.

Backed by the H1 Unlimited Association, Lake Coeur d'Alene will host a full-on exhibition during the Labor Day weekend in September this year.

The Diamond Cup Regatta, as the event will be called, will be an official APBA (American Power Boat Association) sanctioned event featuring five HI Unlimited boats. Next year, the Diamond Cup will be a full race.

The event this year will take place outside Coeur d'Alene city limits near Silver Beach, reported the Spokesman-Review on Friday.

The races, which were at one time a staple of the Inland Northwest, were stopped in 1968 after underage drinking, fights, riots and arrests. Voters in 1985 passed an advisory measure to keep the races from returning. A more stringent measure was passed in 1996.
