BBB issues warning about door-to-door sales

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. -- The Better Business Bureau is warning residents about door-to-door sales in their neighborhood, especially for magazines or alarm systems.

While some companies may be legitimate, the BBB says you should not feel obligated to sign-up or buy something right at the moment a sales representative makes a visit.

The BBB says there has been an increase in calls from homeowners in the area about people trying to sell them magazines or alarm systems.

"Get the company's information. Ask for a brochure, ask for that representative's name, a phone number where you can reach them, a business card," said Chelsea Dannen, spokesperson for the BBB serving Eastern Washington, North Idaho and Montana. "They should have all of those materials available for you, if it's a legitimate company."

The following companies are ones the BBB lists as having been reported in the region, including Yakima. However, they're not saying these companies are involved in any type of a scam:

- Stryke Alarm System
- Devcon Security
- Vivint, Inc.
- Vision Security
- Pinnacle Security

If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe about a door-to-door salesperson, the BBB says to contact your local police department.
