SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - As the founder of the Mountain Gear outdoor equipment company, Paul Fish of Spokane likes to build things. His latest challenge was to build a bicycle out of bamboo.
He says it's a hobby, not a business venture, but he learned a lot about working with bamboo and bicycle construction. Trial-and-error and advice from local bike frame builder led to a bamboo bike that cost about $270 for parts and materials and took about 50 hours of labor.
The frame weighs a little over 3 pounds. The entire bike weighs about 18 pounds.
