Pentagon chief orders review of mental diagnoses

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says he has ordered all branches of the military to review mental health diagnoses dating to 2001.

Previously the Army was conducting an extensive review of behavioral diagnoses after the case of a U.S. soldier suspected of killing 16 Afghan civilians brought fresh attention to the strains of war. Under questioning from Democratic Sen. Patty Murray on Wednesday, Panetta told a Senate panel that he has asked the other services to conduct a review similar to the Army's.

It marked the first time that the Pentagon chief had said publicly that he had requested a review by all the services. Panetta said he was dissatisfied with misdiagnoses and how the military address the cases.
