YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash.-- Homelessness in Yakima County has gone up. That's according to the recent survey by the local homeless network.
The survey counted 996 homeless people in the county. That's up over 12% from last year, but still way down from 2010 results.
And this year, a big increase in the number of youth and senior citizens living on the streets. In fact, people under 18 years old make up almost 30% of the homeless population.
"The youth number is probably the most concerning for us because those are the people that have the least amount of resources available to help themselves," said Mike Murdock, with RiverRock Consulting.
The results weren't all bad though. The survey shows a 27% drop in the number of homeless veterans in the county as well as an increase in the number of people taking advantage of homeless housing programs.
