Grant allows Yakima to build Martin Luther King underpass
YAKIMA, Wash.-- The city of Yakima will receive over five million dollars of federal money to start work on the Martin Luther King Boulevard underpass.
The project is the second of two underpasses planned for Yakima. The first was the recently completed Lincoln Avenue underpass, which went over budget, forcing the city to divert funds to that project. The new grant will replace the money lost and allow the city to finish the whole thing up.
"I think the whole city has underpass fatigue. The first one took much longer and of course we had some cost overrun. Hopefully that won't happen the second time and we can get the whole thing built," says Councilman Rick Ensey.
Ensey says he doesn't know when construction on the new underpass will start, but the project is already designed and planned out.
