Tri-City juvenile jailers share $49,000 settlement

KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) - Nineteen juvenile justice detention officers in Benton and Franklin counties will share $49,000 to settle a claim they were not provided scheduled lunch breaks.

Commissioners in both counties approved the settlement to resolve a year-long grievance filed by the Teamster union representing the guards. Benton-Franklin Juvenile Justice administrator Sharon Paradis says the detention officers always have been allowed to take meal breaks, but the nature of the job sometimes meant the breaks could be interrupted.
