PILOT ROCK – The Rockets will have two new Varsity coaches this fall. Elainna Howland will coach volleyball and Tom Melton will coach football for Pilot Rock High School. The Pilot Rock School Board approved Howland's hiring earlier this spring, and Melton's position was approved at Wednesday night's (June 20) Board meeting.
Howland has coached Rocket Youth Volleyball and Pilot Rock Junior High School volleyball for more than 10 years with tremendous success. Melton is well-known in eastern Oregon from his more than 20 years of coaching junior high school and Pendleton Youth Football.
"Both coaches have a ton of enthusiasm and strong work ethic as they start to prepare for the fall seasons," said Shane Leasy, who will begin his post as Athletic Director for the Rockets on July 1. The School Board approved his hiring in May. "We're looking forward to another exciting season of fall sports and activities in Pilot Rock."
Volleyball kicks off its season on Sept. 1 at a tournament in John Day (Grant Union), while football will take to the field beginning Aug. 31 against Gaston.
