State hospitals sign on to curb Medicaid ER use

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash.- Washington Medicaid recipients may want to think twice before making a trip to the emergency room.

Washington State Medical Association has 100% of the state's hospitals signed on to reduce unnecessary ER visits and costs by Medicaid patients.

The "Seven Best Practices" program redirects ER patients to the level of care and services at the right location.

Lisa Teske with Kennewick General Hospital says there are other options for care outside of the ER like Urgent Care.

The program will also keep track of the chronic medical conditions of Medicaid recipients, substance abuse and lack of primary care access.
