WASH.--The Senate and House approved a bill Friday that supports important transportation projects in Washington State and extends programs for rural communities.
The bill titled "Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act" provides funding for improvement projects in Yakima County and the Tri-Cities. The Blue Bridge in the Tri-Cities made the top of the list and is designated as a safety improvement project.
Yakima County also greatly benefits from the bill. The county is a top recipient of the Secure Rural School Funding program and will receive around $1.8 million. The money will help teachers and police officers maintain their jobs.
Senator Maria Cantwell said, "The bill continues critical investments in local roads and highways. Because of this agreement, important investments for rural counties... will continue."
The legislation will also prevent a jump in student loan interest rates that was scheduled to take effect in July. The bill is now headed to the president's desk to become law.
