Roll-your-own cigarettes tax starts July 1st

The Washington State Supreme Court decided state officials will collect taxes on roll-your-own cigarettes starting Sunday July 1st.

Each roll-your-own cigarettes carton must have a state tax stamp on the inside.

Friday's decision issued a temporary stay, blocking Franklin County's ruling that stopped the state from collecting tax here.

The new tax makes the prices for manufactured and roll-your-own cigarettes about even.

Mike Gowrylow, spokesman for the Washington State Department of Revenue says, this new tax enforcement change the business of roll-your-own cigarettes.

"It eliminates the price advantage of doing this which is why these things were created in the first place to exploit a loophole in both federal law and they think state law that allowed them to make cigarettes without calling them cigarettes," says Gowrylow.

Of the about one hundred roll-your-own machines in the state, only thirty businesses have applied to get the stamps for their stores and only one has received them.
