Two people in jail after pulling gun at Toppenish barbecue
TOPPENISH, Wash.-- Two people are in jail this morning after drawing a gun at a barbecue and trying to escape police by jumping off a bridge.
Police say it started at a barbecue on the 1200 block of Washington Avenue in Toppenish. Officers say at about 8:30 last night a man in a car pulled out a gun on a group of people. He then left the scene in a white Ford Taurus.
Toppenish police found the car and gave chase. The car eventually stopped on the Yakima River Bridge on North Meyers Road, and the two people in the car jumped into the river.
Officers caught up with them about half-a-mile downstream. They arrested a 35-year-old man from Buena for harassment, eluding, unlawful possession of a firearm, and threats to kill. The other person in the car was a 24-year-old woman from Toppenish. She faces charges of domestic violence threats. Police say no one at the barbecue was injured and neither of the suspects were injured.
