YAKIMA, Wash.-- Yakima police also had their work cut out for them last night dealing with their fair share of firework calls.
They say typically, holiday's are always busier and last night was no different. Along with the usual calls officers responded to almost 50 reports of fireworks throughout the city, with one citation given out.
YPD Sgt. Mike Pollard admits, that's not even close to the amount of people lighting them off, but he says having officers out on the streets, making contact with people always makes a difference.
"There's always those people that are going to do their own thing regardless. They'll take that chance, that risk, getting contacted or getting a ticket. We use that as a deterrent the best way we can," said Sgt. Pollard.
He says firework calls are not the top priority for officers but when they do respond to them, they try to not only enforce city laws, but to educate people on just how dangerous they can be.
