Toppenish principal is finalist for national award

SEATTLE (AP) - The principal of Toppenish High School is a finalist for a national principal of the year award.

Trevor Greene is one of six educators competing for the award presented by the national principals association and MetLife. His high school, which is on the Yakima Indian Reservation, has a 95 percent minority student population and all the students qualify for free- or reduced-price lunch.

In four years at the school on the reservation where he grew up, Greene has given more students access to rigorous classes and helped them earn college credit. The superintendent of the Toppenish School District commends Greene for creating a warm, inviting, safe and secure school climate.

Greene and the other five finalists will each receive a $1,500 grant.
