McKenna advises Yakima homeowners

Yakima, WASH.--Attorney General Rob McKenna was in Yakima Monday with a warning about mortgage-related scams.

McKenna spoke at Apprisen, a non-profit that offers consumer credit counseling services, to remind people that they don't have to pay for help when looking for financial relief.

Scammers are calling and posting Internet ads claiming to be from a legitimate company that can offer mortgage services for a good deal.

People are forking over thousands of dollars for benefits they never see.

McKenna said, ""Yakima actually has fewer foreclosures, but even people who are not in foreclosure are being contacted by companies that claim that they'll get a lower interest rate for them in exchange for a big payment."

McKenna said scammers seem to be taking advantage of the publicity surrounding the recent $25-billion settlement with the nation's five largest banks.
