Richland Police looking for couple targeting elderly

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash.

A couple using children to steal from the elderly. It may sound unbelievable, but that's exactly what Richland Police say has happened in two different instances this month.

It all started when Sunnyside police discovered two safes in a dumpster. One had paperwork still inside that was linked back to a residence on the 200 block of Goethals in Richland. Police say those safes belonged to an elderly couple who didn't even realize the safes were missing..

Their caretaker was able to tell police about a couple, and two children who had been at the home over the weekend asking for work.

"They had one of the couple actually go back on the deck and distract them, while the other individual moved the safes from the interior of the exterior. Then the children started creating a disturbance inside the home," said Richland PoliceCaptain Mike Cobb.

The same couple is also suspected of stealing five hundred dollars from a second elderly couple on the 100 block of Thayer drive also over the weekend.

The couple is described as Hispanic and heavy set. The man is between 5'10" and 5'11" and in his early 50's. The woman is 5'5" and in her mid 40's. The children are between 9 and 12 years old.

Captain Cobb says he does believe this couple is targeting the elderly. Contact Richland Police with any information.
