Yakima, WASH.--Herb Brunkhorst was the man of the hour Saturday.
Brunkhorst was inducted into the Holland Club for his service as a Submarine Sailor in World War II.
The ceremony was held at the Living Care Retirement Community in Yakima and Brunkhorst's family and friends were in attendance.
He served aboard the USS Darter and was involved in sending what is claimed to be one of the most important messages in that war.
Darter crew members informed American Headquarters of the location of the Japanese main fleet.
"I was proud to be in the service, serve my country," said Brunkhorst.
After his service, Brunkhorst settled down in Grandview to raise his family.
Holland Club members must have been qualified in Submarines for more than 50 years. They also have to be current members of U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc. (USSVI).
