Sheriff's Office finds excessive weight to be the cause of the sunken boat in Snake River

Posted: Updated:

WALLA WALLA, Wash.-  Walla Walla County Sheriff's Deputies conclude the weight in the boat at the time of the incident contributed to it sinking, putting all five people aboard in the water.

Deputies say the items on the boat at the time of the incident far exceeded the manufactures weight load recommendations for the 12 foot vessel.

An industrial size generator, batteries, two motors, gasoline cans, searchlights, and hunting equipment were among some of the items deputies found to be onboard.

Undersheriff Eddie Freyer says no structural issues were found and the boats plug was in and sealed when the boat was retrieved from the bottom of Snake River near the Hood Park boating docks.

Walla Walla County Prosecutor's Office will review the final investigation report and determine what charges will be filed against the operator of the boat.

14-year-old Timmy Bowden was on the boat moments before it capsized and he drowned.
