KENNEWICK, Wash. -- It's no secret that conventions are big money makers in the Tri-Cities, just try finding a hotel room on a busy Summer weekend.
The people attending these events pour millions of dollars into our economy, but the venues that hold them face a unique problem. They need more space to expand to accommodate these growing events.
Kennewick city leaders like DOn Britain says not expanding the Three Rivers Convention Center will result in lost conventions and dollars, " we just can't continue to turn away conventions and money into this area. So one way or another we're going to have to get the convention center, Three Rivers Convention Center expanded," explains Britain.
According to the Tri-Cities Visitor and Convention Bureau, there have been 121 convention and sporting events this year.
That number is close to similar numbers last year, but there were more people spending more money this year. Already in 2012, $17 million dollars have been invested into the area thanks to conventions.
