Local church and Memorial Hospital host health fair

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH.--Memorial Hospital partnered with Bethel AME church Saturday to host a free community health workshop.

Several volunteers from Memorial were on hand to provide diabetes and blood pressure screenings. Guest speakers gave lectures on nutrition, kidney disease and domestic violence.

The pastor of Bethel AME church, Juliet Hemphill, said the workshop focused not only on physical health but mind and spirit health as well.

"We have a lot of obesity and people with kidneys and high blood pressure, and it's important for us to get healthy," said Hemphill. "It will help us to take care of insurance and just be healthy all around."

The pastor said this is the 3rd health fair they have hosted. She says the church sees a strong need in the community for more health awareness, and they want to help meet that need.
