City Council hears plan for "Metro Parks District"

Posted: Updated:

statYAKIMA, Wash.-- Yakima's City Council heard details today on a new plan to possibly split the parks department off from the city.

A new metro parks district would take over the operation and maintenance of the parks.

The change would also allow them to raise new fees and taxes in an effort to give the department a stable source of funding.

Their budget has fallen off in recent years, by more than $400,000.

Yakima's city manager says the plan could also help fund more new projects.

"Have more access to public space, more trails, more bikeways, and the good news is those are the least expensive to produce and maintain so it could be a win-win scenario," says Yakima City Manager Tony O'Rourke

The parks department estimated the district plan could up their budget by over one million dollars. They still have to work out more details before they could send it to the ballot for the general public to vote on.
