Fire insurance rating could change this year

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Yakima's fire insurance rating could change this year, and that could be bad news for local businesses.

The Washington Surveying and Rating Bureau is currently re-evaluating the city's fire protection.

The evaluation hasn't been done in 16 years and Chief Dave Willson says he wouldn't be surprised if the rating went down.

Willson says it's not all bad news though, the survey also helps the department get better.

"They list all the areas that we were deficient in. So what it does is it helps us focus our attention with what monies we have to try to provide the best service," he said.

Willson says if the rating goes from a four to a five then insurance companies could start charging local businesses more for coverage.

In some cases, businesses could see a 10% increase for a one point rating drop.
