49 animals seized from home in Yakima River Canyon

KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash.-- Kittitas County Sheriff's deputies rescued almost 50 animals from a home in the Yakima River Canyon Tuesday. The rescue was a result of a two-week investigation.

Deputies got a tip that there were animals living in bad conditions at a home on Burbank Creek Road, south of Ellensburg off SR-821.

The Sheriff's Office says deputies tried to work with the people living there to fix the problem, but they were not cooperative.

Tuesday at around noon, deputies served a search warrant and seized 49 animals, including 19 Chihuahuas, 16 doves, and many other birds, dogs, cats, and fish.

"The conditions were deplorable. No animal should be kept in those sorts of conditions and that's the reason the Sheriff's Office intervened," said Kittitas County Under-Sheriff Clayton Myers.

Myers says the animals were taken by the Ellensburg Animal Shelter and will be kept there while the investigation continues.

The Sheriff's Office does plan to pursue criminal charges however Under-Sheriff Myers says it's too early in the investigation to know what charges the owners might face.
