KPD phasing out Harleys

KENNEWICK, Wash. - They're not your typical motorcycles, at least not for this area.

The Kennewick Police Department is changing from the more common Harley Davidson police bikes to Kawasaki Councourses.

Sergeant Ken Lattin said Harleys are air cooled and they have more mechanical problems because of the climate. The extreme heat and slow traffic tend to cause them to overheat.

The Kawasaki's, however, are better built for what they're used for here and they're cheaper than a Harley.

"We look at how long will this bike last, what's the annual cost for maintenance," said Lattin. "The Kawasaki is less money. So we look at a bike that we're keeping over six years. The Kawasaki is clearly a better bike for the citizens of the community."

KPD currently has two Harleys but plans to phase them out in the next few years. Lattin says the Kawasaki's are "fast enough to catch anything."
