K-9 helps sniff out four pounds of meth

aYAKIMA, Wash.-- Local DEA agents made a big bust last week but with the help of a Yakima Police Department K-9 Unit, they discovered a whole lot more.

It all started last Wednesday when agents seized a car during an undercover operation.

Agents bought a pound of methamphetamine and were able to get those drugs, and two drug dealers off the street. But it's when they brought in a YPD K-9 that things took a different turn.

After going through the car, Kazan, a six year veteran with YPD, found a hidden compartment that agents were not aware of.

Inside, they discovered an additional four pounds of meth.

Officer Kevin Lee says hidden compartments aren't uncommon in Yakima, that's why they bring in the K-9.

"It just took us more time to figure out how to get into it. But I knew where to start searching and sometimes you know, not necessarily in this incident but other incidents, if someone doesn't realize that there's a compartment in the car, it could get away from them," said Officer Lee.

The DEA and Yakima police work together on many of their operations and Kazan is regularly called in to sniff out drugs.

The two men that were arrested in this case will now be facing several drug charges and some jail time.
