Extra troopers patrolling roads during Water Follies

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Water Follies attracts people from out of town and locals down to the races, which means lots of drivers on the road.

Washington State Patrol is putting more troopers out to keep the roads safe. Every single Kennewick based trooper is working this weekend. They're focusing on highways around Columbia Park, including Highway 240, Highway 182 and State Route 395. Troopers from Yakima and Sunnyside are being brought eastward to post along Interstate 82 to look for violators going to and from the races.

Trooper David Brandt says all their efforts are to save lives.

"What the Washington State Patrol does is we saturate this one weekend really big because in the past it shows patterns of having fatalities or injury collisions and we want to do anything we can to prevent that and make sure everybody gets home safe," says Brandt.

Troopers are using marked and unmarked cars to look for speeding and DUIs.
