CWU mandatory fees increase

Posted: Updated:

Ellensburg, WASH.--Over the past three years, Washington state has cut funding for higher education in half.

Staff at Central Washington University said students and parents are taking most of the hit. CWU had to compensate for state budget cuts by raising tuition, and on top of that student mandatory fees have increased.

CWU has some of the highest mandatory fees in the state.

Mandatory fees are completely paid by students. They include fees for wireless Internet, computers, recreational facilities and health and counseling services.

The chief financial officer at CWU, George Clark, said mandatory fees for this fiscal year have gone up about $900.

He said all of the mandatory fees go towards items that students ask for including nice gym facilities and their brand new rockwall.

"These are services desired by students such as the rec-center, student government, tech fees along the way," said Clark. "These are items that they've requested and would like to have as part of the co-curricular experience."

Clark said comparing mandatory fees among Universities is like comparing apples and oranges The money is put towards different items based on students needs and demands.

He said CWU may have some of the highest mandatory fees in the state, but it's because students request for these extra services.
