Red Cross running low on blood donations

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON STATE-- The American Red Cross is once again running low on blood donations.

They say they're looking at the lowest amount of blood donations in 15 years. Medical officials say the shortfall could cause some patients to cancel future surgeries, mainly elective ones.

The Red Cross fell 50,000 units short of its needs in June and they say once the July numbers come in they'll likely fall short again.

Doctors say if there's not enough available blood, they may have to push some surgeries back. It would force some patients to put off getting things like knee replacements, hip replacements and other kinds of surgery.

The Red Cross says summer is typically a bad time for donations, making this problem worse.

If you would like to help the Red Cross and make a donation you can schedule an appointment at your local center. The Richland center's number is 800-733-2767. The Yakima Red Cross phone number is 509-834-2600.
