Keene Fitness closing due to Gold's Gym competition

RICHLAND, Wash. -- Gold's Gym is one of the most popular in the area, and with locations in Kennewick and Richland , several smaller gyms are losing ground. Keene Fitness has been up and running for 5 years, and on August 20th, they'll close their doors. "Its been a great experience. We met a lot of great people, its just sad its how it has to end," says owner Jennifer McClure.

McClure's husband, Jeff is preparing to sell off their equipment next week on a first come, first serve basis. McClure says after the new Gold's opened just down the street, it's been hard to compete. "We've been dropping members. We're about half of what we used to be, we were at about 900 members, now we're down to about 450," says Jason Landine, who works at the front desk.

The folks at 24 Hour Fitness in Richland say they've also seen a slight drop. "People like the flash, there is a lot of flash over there, you get a pool, you get that, it;'s fancy, I think they'll come back," says Brigetta Queener, who signs up new members.

Some members who prefer a smaller gym are disappointed with Keene Fitness' closing. "We're all really sad that we're going to be disbanded. (Gold's) It's too intimidating for me, its too busy. My husband is actually a member. We live actually 5 minutes from the Kennewick one. Its not a comfortable place to be," says Rachelle Ferguson who visits Keene Fitness on her lunch break.

Bethel Church will be taking over the lease of the space.
