Yakima Gang Free Initiative speaks with potential partners

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Members of Yakima's Gang Free Initiative spoke with potential partners today about creating new services to keep kids out of gangs.

It's part of the initiative's comprehensive plan to bring in local groups to provide things like a truancy center and outreach services.

The consulting group on the project says steering kids clear of gangs early on will pay off later.

"The likelihood of them developing those behaviors in late adolescence or even into adulthood are significantly reduced... And when I say significantly... By 80 percent," says Consultant Steve Magallan.

The city plans to have providers and services in place by mid-September.

They hope to eventually create a centralized building for all the gang prevention programs, but they don't have the money for that right now.
