Toppenish council approves funds for capital improvements

TOPPENISH, Wash.-- Some city owned buildings in Toppenish will soon be getting some much-needed renovations and repairs.

The city council voted last month to allocate more than $250,000 for repairs to city hall, the public pool, the city library, and several other local buildings.

Toppenish City Manager, Bill Murphy says the money will come several different funds, with the majority coming from a real estate excise tax the city has collected since 1999.

"The challenge has been how to do that. How to pay for what needs to be done to preserve, protect, and maintain those items without it affecting the level of services that the city provides," said Murphy.

Murphy says because of state law, this money can only be used for capital improvement projects, like these renovations.
