More motors than boats stolen in Tri-Cities

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Washington State is fourth in the nation for stolen vessels. Florida tops the list followed by California then Texas. But in the Tri-Cities area, it's not the boat itself that's most often reported stolen... it's the motor.

Even missing motors are being reported less and less. Local law enforcement said every now and then they get a rash of motor thefts, but lately: not so much.

"If you look at the west side, there's a lot of people that have boats, a lot of water, a lot of areas to store boats," said Franklin County Sheriff Richard Lathim. "So that's maybe understandable when you look at the coast of Washington State, there's a lot more boats and I'm sure that's where a majority of those boats are stolen."

Lathim said the lower crime rate in Eastern and Central Washington is also a factor in our area not missing boats. He reminds everyone to make sure their property is locked up to prevent anything from being stolen.
