Adopt-a-thon for ASPCA $100K Challenge

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH.--Saturday was the kickoff event for the second part of the ASPCA $100K Challenge.

The Humane Society of Central Washington is the only shelter in the state participating in the challenge.

From 9am-5pm on Saturday, people could get their pets vaccinated and microchipped, while also checking out some cute furry animals that were up for adoption.

Maddie Wooten, the volunteer coordinator for the Humane Society, said, "Another way that people can help us if they're interested, maybe it's not the right time for your family to adopt, but we are looking for foster homes because we are still getting lots of kittens in. It's kitten season."

Currently adoption rates run around $30 for dogs and $5 for cats.

More than a dozen animals were adopted after the first few hours of the Adopt-a-thon.

Wooten said the shelter takes in around 7,000 animals a year.
